Quartzite is less porous than marble therefore less apt to stain. Marble is compressed limestone and reacts with acids like vinegar and lemon. Quartzite is compressed sandstone. Very hard and not reactive.
One problem with the international style (of which the Dockside building is an example) is the deliberate; homogenous, borderless, cultureless style. (in most modern buildings, one could be anywhere, much like KFC or McDonald's. It's not a good thing.) It's important that one's location is evident in the things around them. There should be some cultural cues to identify that one is IN Charleston. This chair goes some way toward linking the condo to it's Charleston location. Mixing modern and antique west indies is a problem presented by this project because one must honor the building while also honoring the location. Hence a mix of modern with exceptional charleston examples has been settled on as a way forward. Eclectic isn't the answer as that is equally adrift culturally to being all mid century. The challenge is to specifically combine mid century / modern / and Charleston (antique or otherwise). What are the icons of charleston? This interior is a an example that fits the description but isn't specific enough. It could be the carolinas, or miami, or south america, possibly even the philippines.

This excellent design minimizes counter space attached to a wall. The sink and dishwasher make up a "clean up" area at the far end. I want to see an example that puts the sink in the island as well and dispenses with wall counters entirely. Saves on materials and installation. Provides much more cabinet storage at the ideal reachable height...
